How To Increase Link Popularity

These days there is a case to be made for building link popularity as being the most important website optimization factor, even above keyword density and other on-page factors. Did you know that there are little-known but excellent methods to greatly increase your link popularity...

Three or four years ago the most important factors in determining where your website appeared in the search engine results pages had not to do with building link popularity but lay in on page factors. In other words it was the wording and positioning of the wording on your page which was the all-important factor. Your link popularity score was just another factor, and in those days it had much less importance than it does today.

Your title tag was especially important (and to some extent it is still is), closely followed by the keyword density of your page text. If you wanted to rank well for a particular keyword phrase then you had to increase that phrase and variations of it in your text until they reached a percentage rate of roughly between 1% and 6%, this varying with choice of keyword phrase, search engine, etc. These days such factors still matter, especially for pages that target keyword phrases for which there is not a large amount of competition, though effective keyword density rates seem to have come down well below 6%.

Increasing Link popularity as the possibly most important determining factor in search engine optimization really came to the fore with changes that took place in Google and in Yahoo during 2005. That was a year when many previously successful web sites found their rankings in the search engine results pages plummeting rapidly or being lost altogether. Because they had fewer inbound links such sites could not sustain or increase their ranking positions.

So, as building link popularity is now such an important factor, the question is what strategies can website owners and webmasters use to significantly increase link popularity? There was a time when the simple answer to this was reciprocal linking with other webmasters. In those days email requests for link exchanges were opened and replied to more than 50% of the time, and traffic and link popularity could be built using this method.

However, those days are now largely a memory for most webmasters. Today webmasters receive so many spammy requests for link exchanges that they have given up even opening the emails. Even if today's webmasters can forge linking alliances it is frustrating and time-consuming work, and as most of these alliances are reciprocal linking in nature their value in SEO terms is questionable. 1. Know your goal for each article

2. What's your reader's takeaway?

Each article needs to have a takeaway - a benefit - for your reader. This enhances your credibility, and makes it more likely that the reader will visit your site via the links in your resource box to see what else you have to offer.

3. Develop your keywords so your readers will find you

Research the most appropriate keywords for your article. Collect five to 10. You'll emphasize two to three in the article, the others will be added to article's Web page meta tags.

4. Develop an intriguing title that's relevant and includes a promise

Think of your article's title as a headline. It's the most important part of your article, because it attracts attention, and it should include the promise of a benefit to the reader.

Make sure the title is relevant to your article, and includes your most important keyword.

5. Write the article, delivering on your promise

When you're writing your article, ensure that you deliver on the promise you made in the title. Unless you deliver, your reader will have no incentive to click through to your site - he no longer trusts you, because you don't keep your promises.

6. Write the resource box for the article

Your "resource box" has a single goal - to get the reader to click through to your landing page for the article. Make another promise of a benefit if the reader clicks.

7. Post the article on your site

Add the article to your Web site as site content, adding links to products and services relevant to the article.

8. Post the article to an article directory

Should you post your article to several article directories for promotion and traffic, or just one?

Some article marketers believe that you should post your articles to many directories. However, I prefer to post to a single directory. It saves time and I haven't noticed any benefits from posting to many directories. Your mileage may be different.

This is a cool term that I picked up in an intense Webmaster's forum. I fancy myself a reasonably talented SEO marketer. I've never used Google Adwords or any other PPC advertising and I'm well-schooled on traditional as well as Web 2.0 search engine optimization strategies.

I can definitely say that Web 2.0 methods are a lot easier and a lot more fun than the tedious traditional methods.

What is the #1 thing that you need to get higher rankings in the search engines?

The more links to your site, the better your rankings, in a nutshell. There are of course other factors such as the linking site's pagerank, whether or not it's a reciprocal link, and the anchor text used--just to name a few of the biggies.

So what exactly is this "link bait" and how do you make it?

Link bait is the kind of content that makes people want to link to it naturally. No link trading, nothing in return. Just content so good that people just want to be connected with it somehow.

So how do you create this kind of content that we call link bait? Well, you can give them what they were looking for such as news and solid information. If you become known as a reliable source of information, people will link to you whether they use your articles, link to you from their blogs, or bookmark you in the social bookmarking sites for example.

Another way to create link bait is to stir your reader's emotion. Make them laugh, make them angry, scare them. Post the kind of content that makes people say: "Did you read so and so's article? I can't believe she said THAT!"

Create a controversy, if you can back up what you're saying on the matter. Go against the grain. It's ok to have your own opinions. As long as they're well-founded, you should tell the world about them.

That is what the "new web" is all about.

Articles Can Bring Website Traffic to You

To have a successful website on the internet you need to accrue one way links. The search engines such as Google, Yahoo and others can detect link exchanges between sites and even the new triangular link exchanges. Then they devalue those links.

Creating those one way links is the problem. It can be a very time consuming task. A one way link means that, another website chose to link to your site without reciprocation. The common reason would be that your site contains quality or unique content.

The circular problem is, in order for someone to find the content on your site they first had to get there. In order for someone to find and appreciate your content, you need to increase the traffic to your site. More people need to see it. How can we make that happen?

One way for people to get their websites seen is by writing articles. That and directory submissions are great way to bring visitors to your site.

First this is to write an article about a topic that is somehow related to your website. If your website is related to scuba diving, your article should also be about scuba diving. It should be anywhere from 400 to 700 words in length.

When the article is complete write a biography section. In fact, write about ten or twelve biography sections. Each bio should be different than the one before to establish diversity of content within the post.

After your article is complete you will want to submit your article and bio to different article websites. Those websites are allowed to distribute the articles to other website owners looking for fresh content. They can reprint the article intact with your links in the bio section. So every time your article is published, it brings a new one-way link to your website.

How Important is PageRank, Really?

Webmasters can spend most of their waking hours doing everything they can to raise their Google PageRank. It is common knowledge that PageRank, which is largely based upon the number and quality of backlinks a webpage has, is an important factor in how well a particular webpage ranks within the Google search results. Since webmasters spend so much of their time worrying about PageRank, an important question is: how important is PageRank, really?

Many webmasters will tell you from experience that other factors besides PageRank, such as keyword density and placement, have recently taken a larger role in website ranking. No one will argue that PageRank has become irrelevant, but there is significant evidence to suggest that PageRank is not quite as important of a factor in website ranking as it once was.

To illustrate this point, I utilized a very useful tool you can find at prlookup.com. The tool returns regular Google query results with one interesting addition they also give the pagerank for every webpage. Thus, you can type in any word or phrase and see the pagerank of those webpages that rank well (or not so well) for that keyword. Looking at the results, you probably notice something almost immediately. Some sites with low PRs do surprisingly well in the results, while some higher PR sites do quite poorly. Some of this difference can be contributed to sheer content that is, how many times, and in what manner, the keywords you entered actually show up on the webpage. Google takes a close look at keyword usage and density in determining ranking. However, some pages clearly have very close keyword densities, yet in some cases the page with the lower pagerank will somehow still receive a better ranking.

Let us take a more quantitative look at this. Taking 20 of the most popular keywords from rankpulse.com (for this particular day), and entering them in prlookup.com, it is possible to get a better feel for the importance of pagerank. Looking at the first five results only, I wanted to see how many followed in order of highest PR to lowest PR. Surely, out of the results for 20 keywords, a good portion of them will display such an order, right? I have listed the number of webpage results that appeared in correct PageRank order for each keyword (i.e. 5 would indicate that 5 out of 5 results were in order of highest to lowest pagerank). You can see the table with results at Google Advisor.

Although limited by sample size, the results indicated that PageRank is not an overwhelmingly dominant component of website ranking on Google. If it were, the average of correct PageRank order for these keywords really should be somewhere around 4 to 5 (the real average was about 2.15). Thus, other factors including keyword density in webpage content, title, and even the URL, play a significant role in webpage ranking. I want to mention that, while looking over these results, I noticed that about 4-5 of these keywords came up with at least one webpage within the first 10 results (first page on Google) that had absolutely no PageRank at all (PR 0). In addition, a couple keywords came up with results with exactly reverse-order PageRanks that is, the first result at the lowest PR and the fifth result had the highest (for example, PR8, 7, 6, 6, 5 or something similar).

So what does this all mean for the average webmaster concerned with SEO? The first lesson is that keywords and other non-PageRank factors can be absolutely crucial. They can put a PR6 site above a PR8 site (if you don't believe me just use the tool I mentioned above). Does this mean that website owners should not worry about links? Not at all. It's just that all the time people spend on exchanging and acquiring links for the sole purpose of increasing PageRank may be better spent developing website content and keyword strategies instead.

As far as keywords are concerned, we discovered that having keywords in the website title and URL can help a site rank much more competitively. Good content tends to have the fortunate effect of both increasing your one-way in-bound links (people like to link to sites they find interesting, thoughtful, informative, or helpful), thereby improving your PageRank, while at the same time producing keyword rich webpages good for both human viewers and search engine spiders.

The take home message here is that PageRank is important, but it certainly is not worth obsessing over; there are many other factors involved in website ranking that should be given nearly equal consideration. In addition, simply building a good website is the best thing you can do to attract visitors, even without a great PageRank. PageRank, however, will likely follow consider it a welcomed byproduct of your hard work.

In Article Marketing Shorter Is Better!

When trying to do article marketing, you need to know that it's better if your article is shorter rather than longer. No one is going to sit in their chairs all night reading a long article. Nobody wants that. If you want to make a long article, make it an ebook instead, don't make it an article.

Articles tend to show more URL clicks and views when the article is shorter. That's because people actually have enough time to sit down and read a small article rather than a long one. Haven't you ever wondered why longer articles don't get as many clicks? When it's a long article, the reader tends to become bored and decides to skip around, not really understanding what the author is reading, and thus getting mixed messages and finally clicking out of the article.

Longer articles also look less professional. Some might think that they look more professional, but in this case, they're not. Articles that are actually professional are articles that have the most amount of information in the less amount of space. When article writers write long articles, they tend to stray away from their topic or beat around the bush, and this will make your reader irritated and will make them want to click out. So keep your articles short and to the point.

When writing a short article, try to aim from 250-500. The average successful article is from 300-500. But keeping it at 250-500 will be just as good, as long as you have enough valuable information in it. So watch yourself in your word count box when writing an article. Try to make it below 500 or above 300. This will be great practice for you when writing your articles.

Keep your articles short and to the point. Don't think that longer is better. In the case of article marketing, the shorter it is, the better.
