Link Building Strategies For E-Commerce Websites
How to Build Backlinks
This article deals with a topic that is most closely tied with search engine optimization, but the goal is to actually generate visitors from the links you create, not just a better Google Page Rank. While it's true that backlink building will increase your ranking on many search engines, that should never be the sole purpose of link building campaigns.
The first place to begin are online directories. Many directories allow free submissions with no strings attached, and many require a reciprocal link. I do not recommend placing a reciprocal link on your website to a directory unless the directory specifically relates to the content of your site, because you have no control over any of the links contained in the directory except your own.
Many SEO specialists can quickly generate backlinks by posting comments on blogs. These links are worthless for increasing your Google Page Rank because they are "no_follow" links, and they will rarely refer users to your site unless the blog has a very specific topic that relates to your website.
Many SEO specialists also purchase backlinks from link trading websites. While this practice will not get you banned from major search engines, the "big three" search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN) frown upon this activity. The only reason websites currently get away with paying for backlinks is because the "big three" have not developed scalable algorithms to combat this activity. But they will. When they do, you don't want to be left holding the bag.
The best place to generate backlinks is by simply asking. If you have developed a rapport with a certain company, ask them to place your link on their website. This is the best method for two primary reasons:
1) These links will never be penalized or devalued. They are the foundation of the internet, and these types of links will always be valued by search engines.
2) You will actually get visitors referred to you that are interested in the content of your site. This means that the link will actually serve its purpose... linking visitors from their website to your website.
Good luck building backlinks, and remember to be patient.
