I am sure that if you have been using article marketing for some time you would have come across long articles and also short articles. You may be considering which of the two to use.

This is my primary method of traffic generation and I have experimented with both methods. What I have traditionally found is that long articles take up so much space that the reader actually does not see my resource box. In the end he does not end up clicking through to my website and subscribing to my newsletter. So in the end it is very ineffective to build a list.

You may be wondering what to do if you were to have a long 1000 word article. I suggest that in this case you break it up into three parts of approximately 300 words each. Say for example your title is How To Write A Killer Resource Box you would include Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 at the end of the title for each article.

In some cases there may be a use for very long articles. Usually this type will have a lot of expert information condensed. So if you would like to brand your name on the internet you can write one of these and submit them to popular magazines that publish reader's articles for maximum exposure.

However, if you are thinking of building a successful internet business you need to seriously look at building your list and getting loyal customers who buy over and over from you as this is the best way of building a stable business.

I suggest that you focus on 250 to 350 word articles to build your responsive list.

As a zero-cost, exposure-rich way to get your site noticed on the Internet, article marketing is hard to beat. After all, what other method lets you tell people about things that interest them, put your link into other large sites for free and virally spread the word about what an expert you are - for free?

The techniques are simple and well within reach. In fact, effective article marketing means keeping away from sophisticated literary styles. You are communicating with people who want good, clean information that's easy to digest and quick to read. It's as though you were explaining something to a friend. When you write your article, imagine that person to be in front of you and write your article so that they can immediately understand what you are talking about.

Although the techniques are simple, there are some basic rules to be observed. First of all you do need to write correctly. If you have doubts about your ability here, take heart. There are ways to get around this (notably, write short, simple sentences that have a good "flow") and tools to help as well. If you are using a text editor like Microsoft Word, then use the built-in spelling and grammar checker. In fact do this even if you have supreme confidence in your ability to write. Your choice of article sites will be important as well. Some of them are very big and well represented in the search engines. On the other hand, it may be more difficult to get your articles authorized for inclusion. You'll want to write a series of articles in any case to get into the swing of it and to test on various sites. Submit your articles and keep track of how quickly they get included, what the click rate is (how may people reading your article) and how well your articles get rated in search engines, especially for keywords that interest you. Then compare and focus on the article sites that are getting you the best results.

Article sites also have guidelines on length of articles. In fact, make that "restrictions" rather than "guidelines". When you read their submission procedure, you will typically see how they want articles to be submitted. For the length, 250 words is a minimum, 500 words is more in favor. But don't make your article too long either. If you find that you have a lot to say, then chop your article up into 500 word chunks, each chunk dealing with one aspect of the topic. That way you'll be able to submit multiple articles as well and benefit from multiple exposures.

Next on the list is the resource box that is also a feature of many article directories. This is where (and it is the only place) you get to sell. Do not sell in the main text of your article. Inform, entertain, question if you like, but avoid the sales pitch. Editors will often refuse articles that come on too strong on the sales side, and even if they make it through, readers will lose interest fast. After all, their goal in reading is not (yet) to buy. Warm up the discussion by degrees. Give them good information that encourages them to get to the bottom of the article and to click on your link to then go to the next phase of "pre-selling" or possibly a sign-up page for a newsletter, a product or a service.

Have some fun with the resource box if you like. Apply some of the classics to grab people's interest, like spiking their curiosity, using appropriate humor or appealing to their instincts of greed or fear. That's what will incite them to click on and go to your site, to make your article marketing a success.

Article marketing has been really good for me and my list and my web site and my business. That is a pretty strong (although incorrect grammatically) statement, but I am a real big believer in article marketing. It has been the difference fro me and I think that if I had not found article marketing, I probably would not be fulltime online today, but that is really a different story for a different day.

There are two ways to article market, and although they work together synergistically, I think that when you are just starting out, you should choose one and focus on it so that you get really good at it. Then once you know what works and why, from first-hand experience, then you can try the other form.

So what are they? Here is the first one: write and submit articles for the purpose of getting rank-increasing backlinks to your web site. The theory is that when you have lots of backlinks to your web site, the search engines rank you higher, because they assume that you must be popular. To do this, you need backlinks from a lot of sites not a lot from a few sites. So to do this best, it is better to submit 1 article to 500 sites than to submit 500 articles to one site. So if you are going to do this, write one article, then submit it to as many article directories as you can find online. Vary the text of the live link you put in the bio, so that the search engines dont think you are spamming.

The second one is to article market for direct traffic. Now the way to do this is, instead of try to get your own high ranking in a little-known keyword, use the article directories (there are about 3) that have page ranks of 5 or more. So you will limit yourself to just submitting to 5 article directories, or a few more, and write multiple articles. So the idea here would be to write 500 articles and submit them to 5 directories, versus the opposite approach in the first way I mentioned earlier.

It is a known fact that very few people will buy from a sales page the very first time that they see it. If you are purchasing domain names and using these to redirect to your affiliate programs that you promote you are leaving a lot of money on the table.

Most people need to see the offer at least seven times by email before they will purchase. You may get the few that will buy immediately, but over 60 percent of people will buy after the seventh contact. So think of it this way if you are not building a list then you are losing over 60 percent of sales. Also you will not be building your own business. Every time I want to make money I send an email to my list.

I am sure that by now I must have made it clear to you that the main goal of your article marketing will be to build a list. This is the most reliable form of traffic generation and the leads convert up to 10 times better than other traffic sources. So if you can't get this to work it will be very unlikely that you will get another traffic source to work.

The way you do this is you write articles and submit them to all the major article directories. Include a link to your squeeze page in your bio.

  2. Send to friend. Create a send to friend feature to allow users to evangelize your own content within their personal network.

User-generated Content. The good news is that users want to contribute to your website, they're ready and waiting to add valuable content to your website for you. The catch is that you have to put some time into thinking what are the most appropriate ways to offer these opportunities to your audience. And also, you don't want to do this in a vacuum, because it will take a while for enough users to contribute their own content, so you will need to continue supplying the content until your user-base takes off.

  1. Upload pictures / videos. Create contests around popular themes on your site.to encourage users to submit their own videos and pictures to the site. Announce the winner on your live event.
  2. Incentivize by Participation. Your viewers want to participate with your website. By creating contests and user submission campaigns, you will give users a reason to visit the website. Create a contest themed around one of your categories of content.
  3. Classifieds. Create a classified section to allow visitors to interact with eachother and form a community on your website.

Audio / Video. As more and more video websites are gaining popularity and being invested in by large corporations, its not hard to see where the future of information consumption will be. The good news is that tools for creating your own audio and video are increasingly more affordable and accessible. Here's how to leverage your audio/video:

  1. Embeddable Video Player. Leverage existing video content by adding a video player with embedded advertising. Allow users to embed this video into their website, blog or myspace page to share revenue by an affiliate program. Leverage the long-tail effect of users sharing your content within their own networks. Although you may be weary of giving out your content for free, people will always want to come back to your website to get the full experience of your brand, so you need not be worried.
  2. Increase exposure of web content. Place teaser video clips on Youtube and other popular video sharing sites, to tap into the large user bases on those sites and convert them into fans and frequent visitors of your website.
  3. Flash Media. If you're still using windows media as a video player or audio player, stop right now! Standardize your video to flash video format and get rid of windows media player

If it is simply written content, create a chat room and announce a time when you will be online, live, available for question and answer.
